We love this question. The vaginal microbiome is the community of microorganisms found in the vagina. These microorganisms support vaginal health by colonizing the vaginal walls and ensuring the vagina is slightly acidic, which helps keep pathogens at bay. The vaginal microbiome is our first line of defense for vaginal and urinary health, so keeping it in balance is key. When the vaginal microbiome is out of balance, organisms that cause disruptions, like E. coli, Gardnerella and mycoplasma, can thrive, leading to symptoms like itching, burning, irritation, and pain. An out-of-balance microbiome can increase the risk of BV, STIs, UTIs, and yeast infections, and it’s associated with infertility and preterm birth. Chronic imbalances in the vaginal microbiome can lead to recurrent bouts of BV, UTI, and yeast infections over a lifetime.
All of that to say: The vaginal microbiome is an important underpinning of the Awesome Woman offering. We believe a healthy vaginal microbiome is in large part what keeps the rest of our body’s ecosystem in check.
